Remote Work is Perfect For You If…

Here are three facts about me:

✅ I didn’t finish college.

✅ I didn’t come from a rich family.

✅ I don’t have influential connections.

Plus, I come from a developing country. All things considered, my chances of becoming financially and professionally secure should have been slim to none.

But here’s the funny thing: I did succeed — and that’s thanks to remote work.

A world of opportunity at your fingertips

Remote work is incredibly beneficial for people who don’t fit traditional workplace qualifications. Didn’t finish a degree? Deemed “too old” for a job? Shifting careers? These hardly matter.

Where traditional work shuts its doors, remote work opens a world of opportunity.

Now, aside from college dropouts, who else can benefit most from remote work? Let’s explore:

Who can benefit most from remote work?

Anyone can pursue remote work, but it’s especially beneficial if you are:

A stay-at-home parent

Are you a dedicated stay-at-home parent eager to reenter the workforce? Would you like to do that without compromising your role in the family?

Remote work solves that for you thanks to its:

  • Flexibility – By setting your work hours, you get to align your work schedule with school drop-offs, pickups, and various family activities.

  • Reduced commute stress – Without having to commute to and from work, you can save precious hours each day to spend with your family.

  • Inclusive opportunities – The rise of female-led companies has put the spotlight on stay-at-home moms who have invaluable management skills coveted by many employers.

We’ve hired a lot of work-from-home parents — especially moms — here at Shepherd. It’s a great opportunity that allows them to watch their kids grow without sacrificing their careers or incomes.

With remote work, you can both excel as a parent and as a professional.

An OFW who wants to come home for good

Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are often called “bagong bayani”, thanks to their contributions to the economy. But what we often fail to recognize is that these economic contributions come at the cost of OFWs being away from their families for months at a time.

If you are an OFW tired of homesickness, missed family celebrations, and the constant longing to be back with your loved ones in the Philippines, remote work could be a solution.

Here’s how:

  • Competitive rates – Offshore clients offer above-market rates that help you make a decent living comparable to or even exceeding your income abroad. The only difference is that you won’t have to sacrifice time away from family. At Shepherd, we see job offers ranging from $1,500-$2,500 a month — way above local offerings.

  • Low cost of living - Jobs abroad have high salaries, but they also come at a higher cost of living. With remote work, it’s possible to earn in dollars and spend in pesos.

  • Virtual presence – You can contribute to projects and participate in work meetings from the comfort of your home in the Philippines.

  • Flexible hours – Set work hours that align with your family's routine so you can attend important family events, celebrations, and daily activities.

With remote work, you don’t have to deal with the fear of missing out (FOMO) anymore. Remote opportunities make it possible to earn a decent income and support your family without leaving the country.

A college dropout or undergraduate student

Contrary to stereotypes, college dropouts like me can create a bright future for themselves too. Even if you don’t have a college degree or are taking a break from traditional pathways, you can still find gainful employment with remote work.

Here’s how:

  • Skills-based focus – Remote work values skills over degrees, providing an equal playing field for those without a traditional education. As long as you can prove your competence and dedication, you’ve got a shot.

  • Portfolio building – Through hands-on experiences, you can demonstrate your capabilities, creating a compelling showcase for future employers.

  • Global exposure – Remote work exposes you to a global landscape and allows you to engage with international projects.

Remote work levels the playing field for everyone. It’s possible for a college undergrad like myself to find financial stability, invest in businesses, travel the world, and provide for my family.

Degrees can give you an edge, of course, but you also get the same opportunities as long as you put in the work.

A career shifter

Switching careers is hard, but remote work makes the transition a bit easier. Again, remote employers value results over degrees or previous job titles. If you can prove your competence, work on gaining transferable skills, and show your eagerness to learn, you can create a brand new career for yourself.

How remote work can benefit career shifters:

  • Skills showcase – Remote work allows you to redefine your career and showcase your abilities regardless of your past job titles.

  • Online learning opportunities – Invest time in online courses to acquire new skills relevant to your desired career.

  • Networking potential – Open your doors to a global network and build connections with individuals who can offer guidance, mentorship, or even job opportunities.

A disabled individual or someone facing inaccessible commutes

Commuting, especially in big cities like Manila, can be inaccessible to people with disabilities. If you feel excluded from traditional office environments because of disabilities, remote work solves these limitations thanks to:

  • Flexible environment – Full work-from-home or hybrid setups allow you to create a comfortable and accessible workspace tailored to your needs.

  • Inclusive hiring – Remote work bridges diverse talents with companies that focus on abilities rather than physical constraints. We have equal-opportunity clients on our roster who are eager to take on fresh talent.

  • Reduced commuting stress – Remote work eliminates the need for physically navigating through spaces that might pose difficulties. You can work from the comfort and convenience of your own home.

Someone who wants to leave city life

Do you dream of a provincial lifestyle, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but also want a fulfilling career? Remote work balances this thanks to:

  • City-free earning – Break geographical limits and make a living without being trapped in an office cubicle.

  • Flexibility – Flexible WFH or hybrid setups allow you to up your productivity while enjoying the quiet rural life.

  • Work-life integration – Set work hours that align with your provincial lifestyle for a perfect work-life blend.

Our Shepherd team is distributed all over the Philippines. While some choose to stay in Metro Manila, we also have staff who choose to live in the tranquil countryside and suburbs. Not only do they save money, they get to enjoy the peace and quiet that comes from provincial living.

Folks who don’t meet age requirements in traditional jobs

Despite your wealth of experience, do age requirements stall your job search? Traditional jobs here in the Philippines are still quite strict when it comes to age requirements. If you’re struggling to find employment because of your age, remote work opens doors for you thanks to:

  • Age-agnostic opportunities – Remote work welcomes individuals with a wealth of professional history regardless of their age. Your expertise becomes the highlight, not your birthdate.

  • Skill enhancement – Leverage courses and webinars to add to your extensive experience and bring a unique depth of knowledge to your team.

  • Global market access – Get access to a global job market where contribution and not age is the determining factor.

Ready to find your rhythm?

The remote work economy is growing and there's a spot for everyone. Right now, the Philippines ranks 7th among the fastest-growing remote work hubs in the world. There’s demand for remote talent — and folks like us are uniquely positioned to take advantage of it.

Remote work is a journey of empowerment and inclusivity. If you don’t meet the traditional work expectations, there’s always room for you in this ever-expanding, diverse industry.
